Steel 101: An Introduction to the Making and Rolling of Steel

DAY ONE:

Introduction: (8:00 AM - 8:10 AM)

John Packard to introduce our instructors and the main objectives for the Steel 101 program

Raw Materials: (8:10 AM – 9:20 AM) What Makes Steel?

Raw Materials “The Formula” - John Eckstein, Metallurgist with 40+ years of mill experience – this section’s main objectives are:

  • What raw materials are used to make semi-finished steels (and what is “pig iron” anyway?)
  • The “formula” for making semi-finished steels (blast & EAF)
  • Where do the raw materials come from
  • Understand the various “iron units” and terms such as sinter, pellets, DRI/HBI, Mesabi Nuggets, as well as scrap terms (HMS, Plate & structural, shred, busheling, bundles, etc.)
  • We will discuss the trends the industry has experienced which impact the cost of making steel
  • Discussion about mill “costing”
  • Q&A

Coffee Break: 9:20 - 9:30 AM

Session 2: (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM)

“The Steel Making Process” - John Eckstein, Metallurgist & Lou Colatriano, President – Steel Development Company, Long Products
Division with 40+ years of blast & EAF steelmaking experience – this section’s main objectives are:

  • Understand the process to produce semi-finished steel (and what semi-finished steel means) via the Blast/BOF and EAF furnaces
  • We will walk through the flow of raw materials through to the making of blooms, billets & slab
  • Understand how various grades of semi-finished steels are made: commercial, alloy and highly refined steels
  • Lou Colatriano will introduce us to the rolling practices of long & structural products
  • We will discuss the trends which have/are impacting steel production and cost competitiveness (flat & long products)
  • Q&A

Break: (10:40 AM - 10:50 AM)

End Sessions for Day 1: (12:00 PM)

Load Shuttle for Steel Mill Tour (Mill Tour is Optional)

Luncheon: (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM)

Those Taking the Tour: Arrive at Mill

Mill Tour: (1:00 PM)

Tour of Blast furnace, BOF/Caster, Hot Strip Mill – Pickle/Tandem Mill and new Automotive Galvanizing Line tour if time allows:
Guides will be from Steel with SMU Instructors as back-up for one-on-one questions.

End Tour: (4:00 PM) Load shuttle for hotel; (4:30 PM) Arrive back at hotel

Cocktail/Networking Reception: (5:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Rotunda Ballroom at the Steel 101(for all Steel 101 attendees, instructors, and guests).

DAY TWO:

Continental Breakfast: (7:30 AM - 8:00 AM)

Flat Rolled Products: (8:00 – 10:00 AM)

Flat Rolled Products - Coil & Sheet, Plate, Coated Products

Instructor: Steve Painter, recently retired Regional Manager Commercial for Severstal Sparrows Point. Assisting
will be John Eckstein & John Packard, Publisher of Steel Market Update with 31 years active flat rolled steel experience.

This section’s main objectives are:

Plate:

  • From semi-finished slabs to plate.
  • We will discuss plate rolling practices, grades and practical applications
  • How is plate sold

Hot Rolled:

  • From semi-finished slabs to hot rolled coil
  • We will discuss the various grades and applications
  • Hot rolled as a “swing” product moving on to conversion mills for higher value products (CR & Coated)
  • What mills make hot rolled in U.S. & Canada

Cold Rolled Full Hard:

  • The rolling process on a tandem mill and how cold rolled is made
  • Explain the difference between a pickle tandem mill and a stand-alone tandem mill
  • What are the typical applications for FHCR

Cold Rolled Annealed:

  • The batch and continuous annealing process
  • Why cold rolled coils are annealed
  • What is a skin mill (temper mill) and why CR material is skin passed
  • What are surface finishes and how is hardness obtained
  • You will learn the various grades and applications for cold rolled fully annealed products.
  • What is “black plate”

Coated Products:

Galvanized, Galvannealed, Galvalume, Aluminized, Galfan & Tin Plate:

  • The coating process for hot-dipped galvanized, Galvannealed, Galvalume, Aluminized & Galfan
  • Why are zinc & aluminum are applied to the substrate
  • What are the sacrificial qualities of galvanized
  • The heat resistant qualities of aluminized
  • The development of Galvalume by Bethlehem Steel
  • How galvannealed is produced
  • What are the painting qualities of coated steels
  • The available surface treatments (including Phosphitized/Bonderized) on coated products
  • What are tin mill products
  • “G” and “A” coatings on coated products mean and how they are measured
  • The various grades and applications for galvanized, Galvalume, galvannealed and aluminized (plus Galfan & Tin Plate as time permits)

Summary of Flat Rolled Products:

  • Explain the size and scope of the steel market we work in
  • Discuss steel terms, CS, DS, DDS, EDDS, Trip Steels, Specialty Steels, etc.
  • We will show samples of hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized, Galvalume, Galfan, Aluminized, etc.
  • Talk about demand and supply in the industry
  • How products are sold
  • Who the main players are
  • Q&A regarding all flat rolled products
