Steel 101: Mill Tour

Mill Tour Details

The tour will begin with a short commute to the mill. We will eat lunch at the facilities while our tour guides tell us about the tour and we learn more about the mill. We will then put on jackets, pants, steel-toed boots, and additional safety equipment provided by the mill. After we have divided into 2 groups, we will tour the blast furnace, BOF/Caster, Hot strip mill, and brand new galvanizing line. If time permits, we will also visit the new pickle tandem cold rolling mill.

We will have experienced mill tour guides who will walk you through the operations. SMU instructors will also be available to help with any one-on-one questions you may have about the steel making processes we will view. The mill tour will last around 3-4 hours. We will return to the hotel, where after having a short time to refresh, we will have a cocktail/networking reception for both those on the tour as well as those who chose to stay behind.

Those attending the tour will be able to watch dirt become steel. The tour will assist you in your understanding of the steel making process by having a more “hands on” (visual) experience added to the quality instruction provided by the SMU Steel 101 instructors. If you have never toured a steel mill before, don’t miss this opportunity.
