Mesabi Nugget Plant Resumes Production
Steel Dynamics' Mesabi Nugget plant will resume production, after being shut down for maintenance.
The rotary hearth furnace was shut down Nov. 12 for repairs. The plant manager Jeff Hansen said that the plant will be up and running by today, according to the Mesabi Daily News. This plant is near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, employing about 90 workers.
Mesabi Daily News explains that "the plant makes iron nuggets that are about 95 percent pure to feed electric arc minimills and produce flat-rolled steel. Conventional taconite plants typically produce pellets with an iron content of about 65 percent. The Mesabi Nugget plant began production in January."
