Steel Market Update will be watching and listening to the domestic steel mills as they begin making their earnings announcements and holding their conference calls with analysts beginning this week. Of particular interest will be comments made by the mills regarding raw material costs (iron ore, coking coal & scrap in particular) and their forecast for the impact of these materials on their cost structure for the remainder of 2011. Also of interest will be comments made regarding steel prices, capacity utilization rates and anything each mill is doing to keep supply tight, mill lead times, changes they are seeing in the markets regarding demand and what equipment is being taken off or put back online.

Monday: Steel Dynamics (SDI) will be the first mill out of the box reporting earnings for 4Q 2010 prior to the stock market opening. UBS Steel Analyst, Timna Tanners forecast $.06 per share while the consensus is $.09 per share for 4Q 2010. Earnings will be released on Monday morning and the company conference call will be held at 11 AM ET on Monday.

Tuesday: AK Steel will announce 4Q earnings before the market opens. UBS has AK Steel losing $.56 per share based on the company’s guidance in a 3Q press release of an $80/ton loss according to a note in a recent UBS note to their clients. The consensus is for a $.63 per share loss. AK Steel conference call with analysts will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday.

Tuesday: U.S. Steel will announce 4Q results prior to the opening of the stock market. UBS has forecasted a loss of $1.25 per share while the consensus has the loss pegged at $1.06 per share. U.S. Steel will hold their earnings conference call at 3 PM ET on Tuesday.

Thursday: Nucor will announce their 4Q results before the market opens. UBS analyst Timna Tanners has estimated Nucor will lose $.14 per share while the consensus is the company will lose $.08 per share for the quarter. According to a UBS note Nucor guided to a loss of $.10-$.15 per share on December 16, 2010. The Nucor conference call with analysts will take place at 2 PM ET on Thursday.
