Steel 101: An Understanding of the Making & Rolling of Steel - Chicago July 13-14, 2011

Steel Market Update will conduct our second Steel 101 workshop this summer in downtown Chicago. Our first program in Houston was well attended and received by the steel community. Attendees included individuals who just recently were introduced to the business to a third generation owner of a manufacturing company. We had a steel analysts and members of the financial community as well as distributors, end users. Wholesalers and steel mills.

Our Steel 101 program provides a good foundation for those who have been in the industry a relatively short period of time and is a good refresher course for those who would like to brush up on their skills.

We cover the steel making process from raw materials, the formula for making pig iron and then steel, we discuss costing for both an electric arc furnace (EAF) as well as the blast furnace/BOF perspective. Our instructors, each with at least 33 years of active steel experience in the area they will be teaching, will go through the process of rolling plate, flat rolled sheet (hot rolled, HRPO, CRFH, cold rolled fully processed, galvanized and all its variations, Galvalume, Galfan and tin plate), long products – bar & structural which includes rebar, channels & beams, merchant bar, wire rod to SBQ and we will have a segment on pipe & tube in all of its forms.

We have expanded our Chicago workshop to include a tour of a local mini-mill: NLMK Indiana.

Our full program is broken into two days. However, we do offer multiple options for those who may have specific interests – such as flat rolled sheet products only – or long products only. All of our options include raw materials and the steel making process and come both with and without the mill tour.

As with all Steel Market Update sponsored programs we offer discounts to those whose company is a member of SMU and receives our newsletter. We also offer discounts for early registration and for groups of three or more from the same company registering at the same time.
