Incident At Essar Steel Algoma Injures Three Workers

An incident occurred on Saturday, May 7 in Essar Steel Algoma’s Steelmaking Department, injuring three people. Ministry of Labour spokesperson Matt Blajer told SooToday.com that “the incident occurred when a piece of slag fell from the inside of a vessel in the number 2 steelmaking department, causing a flash and a large fire ball to exit the vessel.”

Brenda Stenta, Manager - Corporate Communications, told SMU that “an employee suffered a burn injury as a result of an incident in our Steelmaking Department. He was transported to Sunnybrooke Hospital in Toronto where he is undergoing treatment. Two other employees suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. The Ministry of Labour was notified. They attended on site and have since released the scene. A comprehensive joint union management safety investigation is underway.”
