We are unusual in that we provide the range of flat rolled steel selling prices as well as our index

Steel Market Update closely follows hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and galvalume pricing.  We are a bit unusual in that we publish a range of pricing which we determine through our hundreds of contacts at service centers, manufacturers, steel mills and trading companies all over North America.  It is our opinion the range and pricing trends are more important than a specific index. We provide both.

We index flat rolled steel prices on a weekly basis and publish our results every Wednesday (Tuesday evening for our diehard members – which is everybody).

The chart above is for this week’s hot rolled index.  The graph shows the weekly movement of our range of prices as well as the index (the average of our high and low pricing).  The Steel Market Update current index for hot rolled coil is $685 per ton ($34.25/cwt) down from $715 from a few weeks ago.

Again, we follow hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and galvalume mill pricing and trends. You can find this information on our website using the Steel Prices tab on our toolbar.  The Steel Prices section is for members and trial members only.

“Letter to the Editor: “A unique subscriber….” I am a unique subscriber to the Steel Market Update….I am in the plastic injection molding industry! So why do I read the Steel Market Update? SMU provides me with a condensed rolling picture of the steel industry which on one hand supplies us materials for the molds we build in-house and on the other hand provides materials to a competitive option for our customers (example: a fabricated metal housing for a medical instrument versus an injection molded plastic housing?). In addition to understanding the current cost and supply direction of plastic resin and mold building materials, it is equally important I have insight into my indirect competitors supply/cost issues….SMU provides me with that insight! THANK YOU SMU, job well done!” – Tim Smock CEO Seaway Plastics Engineering, Inc
