AK Adds Electrode Surcharge on Stainless

In response to the recent hike in the cost of graphite electrodes, AK Steel Holding Corp. will implement an electrode surcharge for all stainless product shipments effective Oct 29. The surcharge for November will be $13.20 per ton. The amount will be same for all stainless grades produced by the company. The monthly electrode surcharge amount will be listed in the company's monthly surcharge publication.

WEST CHESTER, OH--(Marketwired - May 17, 2017) - AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) announced today that it has accepted an award of up to $1.8 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the Advanced Manufacturing Office's Next Generation Electric Machines (NGEM) program to develop the next generation of advanced, non-oriented electrical steels (NOES) for motors used in a wide variety of industrial and automotive applications, including hybrid electric vehicles.


AK Steel reported net income of $62.5 million for its best first quarter since 2008. Shipments declined to 1,486,900 tons year-over-year due to intentionally reduced sales of lower margin products. Net sales increased one percent from Q1 2016 to $1.53 billion as a result of increases in average selling price on both spot and contract sales, higher specialty steel surcharges, and improved product mix. Average selling price per ton increased 12 percent to $1,022 from a year ago.

UAW at AK Steel Butler Works Ratify Contract

AK Steel union members at Butler Works, in Butler, Pa., have ratified a two and a half year labor agreement. The contract will cover 1,200 hourly production and maintenance employees represented by UAW Local 3003 and will be in effect until April 1, 2019.


Layoffs to begin Christmas Week at AK Steel Ashland Works

AK Steel plans to begin layoffs at its plant in Ashland, Ky., during the week of Christmas.

Scott Conley, President of USW Local 1865 said 615 to 620 people will be laid off and everyone should be out of the hot end of the plant by December 31.

West Chester, OH, November 24, 2015—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) said today that its Board of Directors has approved the following executive promotions, effective January 1, 2016:

- Jaime Vasquez has been named Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Vasquez is currently Director, Finance. He will report to Roger K. Newport, who is currently Executive Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer. As previously announced, Mr. Newport has been appointed Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors, also effective on January 1, 2016.
