August Raw Steel Production at 2.5-Year High

Total raw steel production for the month of August was 7,824,820 net tons, with 5,344,663 tons produced by electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and 2,480,157 tons produced by blast furnaces. This is the highest monthly production figure seen since January 2015 when 8,002,074 tons were produced. August raw steel production was 150,877 tons or 2.0 percent lower than the previous month, and 496,286 tons or 6.8 percent higher than the same month last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in Washington. AISI's monthly estimates are different than the weekly estimates we report; the monthly estimates are based on over 75 percent of the domestic mills reporting versus only 50 percent reporting for the weekly estimates.

Weekly Raw Steel Production Declines

Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,733,000 net tons in the week ending Sept. 9, an 8.9 percent increase from the same period last year, but a decrease of 0.8 percent from the prior week. The mill capability utilization rate was 74.3 percent, down slightly from 74.9 percent the prior week, but up from 68.0 percent the prior year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

U.S. Raw Steel Production Continues Uptrend

Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,747,000 net tons in the week ending Sept. 2, up 0.4 percent from the prior week and an 8.6 percent increase from the same period in 2016. The mill capability utilization rate was 74.9 percent for the week, up from 68.8 percent in the same week last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

Adjusted year-to-date production through Sept. 2 was 60,900,000 net tons, up 3.2 percent from the same period last year. The capability utilization rate of 74.6 percent was up from 72.1 percent through the first eight months of 2016.

Raw Steel Production Dips for the Week

Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,763,000 net tons in the week ending Aug. 19, a 6.5 percent increase from the same period last year, but a 1 percent decline from the prior week, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

The mill capability utilization rate for the week averaged 75.6 percent, up significantly from 70.8 percent in the year-ago week, but down slightly from the previous week’s 76.4 percent.

Total raw steel production for the month of June was 7,487,972 net tons, with 5,182,147 tons produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) and 2,305,825 tons produced by blast furnaces. June raw steel production was 118,921 tons or 1.6 percent lower than the previous month, and 34,195 tons or 0.5 percent lower than the same month last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in Washington. AISI's monthly estimates are different than the weekly estimates we report; the monthly estimates are based on over 75 percent of the domestic mills reporting versus only 50 percent reporting for the weekly estimates.

Raw Steel Production Ahead of Last Year

Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,769,000 net tons in the week ending July 29, down 0.2 percent from the previous week, but up 6.1 percent from the same period last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

The mill capability utilization rate for the July 29 week was 75.9 percent, down from 76.1 percent the prior week, but up from 71.3 percent the prior year.

U.S. raw steel production totaled 1,773,000 net tons in the week ending July 22, up 0.6 percent from the previous week and an increase of 6.4 percent from the same period last year. The mill capability utilization rate was 76.1 percent, up from 75.6 percent in the prior week and 71.3 percent a year ago, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.

Mill capacity utilization for the July 15 week averaged 75.6 percent, up from 74.3 percent the prior week and 71.3 percent the prior year.

May raw steel production was 231,724 tons or 3.1 percent higher than the previous month, but 86,653 tons or 1.1 percent lower than the same month last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in Washington.
