Tight supplies of graphite electrodes used in the electric arc furnace steelmaking process have raised electrode prices to the point that at least two stainless steel mills have increased their surcharges.

Outokumpu was the first with a surcharge of 30 euros (about $35.50) per metric ton on Sept. 27 in most markets except the U.S. AK Steel followed with a $13.20 per short ton electrode surcharge effective with November shipments.

Fourth-Quarter Steel Mill Maintenance

Thursday, 28 September 2017 14:29

Steel Market Update has been working with steel buyers and the domestic steel mills in order to provide a better understanding of what outages/maintenance is scheduled above and beyond normal mill maintenance. Even though there are a number of outages scheduled, we are being told by both mills and their customers that the downtime has been reflected in lead times and there should not be any disruption to normal order flows.

Throughout the day (Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017), Steel Market Update (SMU) has been discussing steel prices, AK Steel’s price announcement and whether or not there is any way the mills will be able to collect another $30 (or anything) based on what is happening in the market right now.

“This increase puzzled all of us. I guess if you have no spot tons to sell you can raise prices whenever you would like. Not sure what they were thinking,” said one flat rolled steel service center executive describing his feelings about AK Steel's price announcement.

AK Steel Seeks Broad Section 232 Action

Tuesday, 25 July 2017 16:30

AK Steel is looking for a broad application of Section 232 that will address the continued increase in unfairly traded imports. CEO Roger Newport said during the second-quarter earnings conference call that trade cases are not working the way they were designed and hopefully Section 232 will address loopholes and those who figure out how to "beat the system." Newport disagrees with the use of the word "protectionism" and said the industry simply wants a fair and level playing field.
