Millennials are the steel industry's future and are anxious to solve problems and get results. Attendees who remained for the final presentation at the SMU Steel Summit heard an eye-opening discussion on just what the millennial generation is seeking and how the steel industry can recruit and retain talent from this important demographic.

Three young professionals from Pacesetter, Cargill, and Hubbell, Inc., offered their insights on millennial behavior, goals, and recruitment.

Steel Summit: Free and Fair Trade

Tuesday, 05 September 2017 16:52

Steel Market Update asked four panelists at the 2018 Steel Summit to define free and fair trade and offer some solutions to what most in the industry consider unfairly traded steel imports.

Philip Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association representing North American EAF steel producers, said there are five components of free and fair trade. Free and fair trade is rules-based and grounded in free market principles; involves open markets that make people want to trade with each other; opposes state ownership and market-distorting subsidies; recognizes the right to use, when necessary, trade remedies and laws to address illegal and unfair trade practices; and includes an inherent right for a country to defend its trade laws.

"To be angry at the mills for wanting the government to enforce its laws," said Bell, "is like the fire department responding to a five-alarm blaze and being upset with the people who called 911. The mills have a right to do this."

Hurricane Takes Forefront at Steel Summit

Tuesday, 29 August 2017 17:43

SMU's Steel Summit 2017 kicked off its first full day with heartfelt empathy for those colleagues in the Houston region who were unable to make it to the conference in the wake of destruction left by Hurricane Harvey.

The devastating floods along the Gulf Coast and in Houston may have a lasting impact on the economy, said Dr. Chris Kuehl, keynote presenter and managing director of Armada Corporate Intelligence. Up to 10 percent of the Texas population may be displaced as families move from destroyed homes and flooding, he said.

SMU Steel Summit 2017 Conference Schedule

Sunday, 27 August 2017 12:30

Tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 28, the steel event of the year will kick off in Atlanta. With over 650 steel and manufacturing executives registered, expectations are for this conference to truly be the most dynamic steel conference in North America for 2017. Welcome to the Steel Market Update Steel Summit Conference. This is what the fuss is all about.

Three days of rubbing shoulders with decision-makers from around the United States, Canada and Mexico as we enjoy one another while learning, networking and preparing your company for the future. We also have industry executives coming from Ecuador, Poland, Egypt and the United Kingdom.

We have 23 excellent speakers presenting topics of interest for those involved in the steel industry. Steel Market Update has spent 12 months preparing for this conference with one goal: for this conference to be the best one yet. We think we will accomplish that goal.

Here is how we see the next three days of our conference playing out:

One of the reasons why the SMU Steel Summit Conference is successful and growing at a time when most conferences are not is due to the options we are given through the support of our sponsors and exhibitors. The cost to put on a three-day conference is truly staggering. Nonetheless, one of our goals has always been to provide a top-notch conference at an affordable price for those wishing to attend. We may well be the best attended steel conference in North America this year and, if so, it will be at the lowest ticket price of any of the major conferences. Our sponsors allow us the flexibility to control our ticket prices.

Steel Market Update Events App

Sunday, 27 August 2017 11:20

The 2017 SMU Steel Summit Conference Events App is now available for all attendees, sponsors and exhibitors to download and use. The App is where you find all the most up-to-date information about the conference, what you work from to network with other attendees, and what you will use to get the speaker presentations after the conference is over. To get the most out of the SMU Steel Summit Conference experience, you will want to download and use the SMU Events App.

Welcome to the mobile era. When you attend Steel Market Update events, you can be armed with a tablet or smartphone and have a much better, and more productive, conference experience. Everything is at your fingertips: a detailed conference agenda, list of speakers with biographical information, a complete list of the attendees, sponsors and exhibitors, and more. You can take notes as you go and, importantly, you can connect, engage and follow up with other attendees in ways you have not been able to do in the past. You can search through the attendee list and find those you would like to contact, send an email to meet later or forward company information with ease. And, with the Steel Market Update App, social media is integrated, as well. You can tweet or post to Facebook or LinkedIn during the event without leaving the App, interacting with others quickly and efficiently.

We continue to develop new and better ways to simplify and enhance your conference experience.

Each year, more and more of our attendees use the SMU App. At the 2016 SMU Steel Summit Conference, 80 percent of the attendees downloaded the App. Last year, the most popular features were the ability to access others attending the conference and viewing the agenda. We also found more people accessing the speaker presentations through the App. During the conference, we used the polling feature for the first time. That’s when we discovered twice as many of our attendees supported Donald Trump than Hillary Clinton. Our attendees got some early insight on who would be the next president months before the election.
