U.S. raw steel production totaled 1,773,000 net tons in the week ending July 22, up 0.6 percent from the previous week and an increase of 6.4 percent from the same period last year. The mill capability utilization rate was 76.1 percent, up from 75.6 percent in the prior week and 71.3 percent a year ago, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.
Adjusted year-to-date production through July 22 totaled 50,339,000 net tons, up 2.5 percent from the same period last year.
Following is production for the week ending July 22, by district: Northeast, 214,000 net tons; Great Lakes, 677,000 net tons, Midwest, 166,000 net tons; South, 637,000 net tons; and West, 79,000 net tons; for a total of 1,773,000.
The raw steel production tonnage in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage from 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. AISI’s monthly production report provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75 percent of U.S. production capacity.
Mill capability for the second quarter was about 30.3 million tons, compared to 30.4 million tons for the same period last year and 30.0 million tons for the first quarter.
