SMU Price Ranges & Indices: Up $5…
Written by John Packard
October 30, 2013
Flat rolled steel prices continued to rise over this past week. With the exception of Galvalume all of our averages increased by $5 per ton compared to this time last week. The domestic mills continue to be quite firm in their pricing stance and negotiations are limited (but not impossible).
The market expects another round of price increase announcements should scrap prices rise by more than $20 per gross ton. Early indications are scrap prices will move higher in November by $20 to $40 per gross ton.
Here is how we are seeing flat rolled prices this week:
Hot Rolled Coil: SMU Range is $650-$680 per ton ($32.50/cwt- $34.00/cwt) with an average of $665 per ton ($33.25/cwt) fob mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased by $10 per ton compared to last week while the upper end remained the same. Our average is now $5 per ton higher compared to last week. The trend for hot rolled is for prices to be stable to slowly rising over the next 30 days.
Hot Rolled Lead Times: 3-6 weeks.
Cold Rolled Coil: SMU Range is $750-$780 per ton ($37.50/cwt- $39.00/cwt) with an average of $765 per ton ($38.25/cwt) fob mill, east of the Rockies. The lower end of our range increased by $10 per ton compared to last week while the upper end remained the same. Our average is now $5 per ton higher compared to last week. The trend for cold rolled is for prices to be stable to rising over the next 30 days.
