A worker at US Steel Great Lakes Works in Ecorse, Mich., was killed on Saturday evening when run over by a semi-truck. According to reports, Heather Warren was directing truck traffic when hit by a truck operated by ALCO Transportation at Great Lakes Works Cold Mill Shipping. The incident is under investigation.
The Ecorse plant has been the site of two other fatalities. In April 2014 a worker was killed when a crane flipped over; in December 2013 a worker died in a steel plant explosion.
In March, a roof collapsed at the #2 basic oxygen furnace, halting operations but resulting in no injuries.
A spokesperson for US Steel issued the following statement:
“On Saturday, April 18, a U.S. Steel employee was fatally injured in an incident involving ALCO Transportation at Great Lakes Works Cold Mill Shipping. We take the safety of our employees very seriously and we will work closely with the United Steelworkers and other agencies in the investigation. An investigation into the incident is underway. No further details regarding the incident are available at this time. The company expresses our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family.”
