Comparison Price Indices: Little Movement Due to Holidays
Written by John Packard
January 3, 2016
The various indexes followed by Steel Market Update each produced new prices this past week. There was minimal price movement due to the Christmas and end of the year holidays which impacted the number of actual transactions occurring between the steel mills and their customers. Both Platts and Steel Market Update kept prices unchanged compared to the previous week. SteelBenchmarker, which only produces steel prices twice per month saw their hot rolled number as higher by $8 per ton.
SteelBenchmarker also raised their cold rolled assessment by $9 per ton and their plate assessment by $23 per ton.
Here is how we saw prices during the last week of December.
FOB Points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
Note that SteelBenchmarker produces numbers twice per month. On the weeks they produce numbers we will include them in the average. The weeks where they do not produce numbers (NA = not available) we will not include their outdated numbers in the CPI average.
