Comparison Price Indices: Quiet as the New Year Begins
Written by John Packard
January 8, 2017
There was very little movement in flat rolled steel prices according to the Platts and Steel Market Update steel indexes. This is expected to change as we move into the second week of the New Year as AK Steel announced a new $40 per ton price increase on Friday.
Benchmark hot rolled is being reported as averaging $600 per ton ($30.00/cwt) by Platts and $610 per ton ($30.50/cwt) by Steel Market Update. Our index was unchanged from the previous week while Platts increased by $5 per ton.
Cold rolled results were similar to hot rolled only SMU had CRC up $5 per ton to $815 per ton ($40.75/cwt) while Platts kept their CRC average at $810 per ton ($40.50/cwt).
SMU kept galvanized and Galvalume the same as what we reported during the last week of December.
Platts kept plate prices as unchanged at $590 per ton FOB Southeastern mill.
SteelBenchmarker did not report prices this past week. SteelBenchmarker only reports prices twice per month.
SMU Note: Galvanized prices include $69 in extras for a .060″ G90 product. Galvalume prices include $291 in extras for a .0142” AZ50 Grade 80 product.
FOB points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
Note that SteelBenchmarker produces numbers twice per month. On the weeks they produce numbers we will include them in the average. The weeks where they do not produce numbers (NA = not available) we will not include their outdated numbers in the CPI average.
