Written by Tim Triplett
July 5, 2017
Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,717,000 net tons in the week ending July 1, off 0.7 percent from the previous week and down 1.5 percent from the same week in 2016. The mill capacity utilization rate was 73.6 percent, down from 74.2 percent the prior week and 74.5 percent the same time last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.
Adjusted year-to-date production through July 1 totaled 45,070,000 net tons, up 2.1 percent from the same period last year.
Following is production for the July 1 week by district: Northeast, 204,000 tons; Great Lakes, 668,000 tons; Midwest, 168,000 tons; South, 608,000 tons; and West, 69,000 tons, for a total of 1,717,000.
The raw steel production tonnage in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage provided from 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI monthly production report, available by subscription, provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75 percent of U.S. production capacity.
Note: Capability for second-quarter 2017 is approximately 30.3 million tons, compared to 30.4 million tons for the same period last year and 30.0 million tons for first-quarter 2017.
