Nucor will shift production at subsidiary Kirby Building Systems to Portland, Tenn., laying off approximately 100 production workers. The shift in operations reflects production changes in the Nucor Buildings Group, which manufactures custom-engineered and standard metal buildings and components.”
“In the coming months, Nucor will be transferring all production of our American Buildings Company (“ABC”) plant in Carson City, Nev., to our Nucor Building Systems (“NBS”) facility in Brigham City, Utah,” said Nucor spokesperson Katherine Miller in an email. “In addition, we will be transferring all production from our Kirby Building Systems (“KBS”) plant in Starkville, Miss., to our KBS facility in Portland, Tenn. These announced changes are a major step to right-size the capacity of our Buildings Group to the market, and it will increase our flexibility to better serve our customers.”
“As part of the announced changes, our NBS-Utah facility will be renamed NBG Manufacturing-Utah and will produce product for both our ABC and NBS brands,” added Miller. “This change supports and aligns with our multi-brand commercial strategy.”
The layoffs came as a surprise to Starkville Mayor Lynn Spruill, who did not hear about the layoffs until Wednesday. “To say that we’re disappointed obviously is an understatement,” Spruill told the Starkville Daily News. “We weren’t aware and never had an opportunity to see if there was something creating a situation where there was a problem with them.”
Those employees who wish to remain with Nucor will be helped to find employment opportunities within the company, said Miller.
