April 12, 2018
The new cold mill complex at Nucor Steel Arkansas is now expected to start up in the first half of 2019, said the company. Nucor executives and state and local officials gathered at the facility for a ribbon cutting event yesterday.
Nucor announced the new $230 million cold mill in September 2016 and said it would expand the company’s capacity to make automotive grade steel. The mill will produce specialty grade steels including third generation advanced high-strength steel, high-strength low-alloy steels and high-efficiency electrical steel. The expansion will increase production by 650,000 tons per year.
High-end automotive steel is a growth market. Ducker Worldwide estimates the auto market will consume four million tons of advanced- and ultra-high-strength steels annually by 2025.
