SMU Steel Summit Conference Hotel Information
Written by John Packard
May 16, 2018
Steel Market Update published some inaccurate information about our room blocks for the upcoming Aug. 27-29 SMU Steel Summit Conference. We stated that the entire room block was sold out. In fact, only the lead hotel – Atlanta Marriott Gateway Hotel – has sold all of the rooms in our block. The other two Gateway hotels, Renaissance and SpringHill Suites, have a limited number of rooms left. We have also added a new Marriott property, which is located a short distance away from the Georgia International Convention Center. The new hotel is called the Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel (not to be confused with the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway Hotel), and we will have a shuttle running from this hotel to the convention center. Details about rates and how to register are shown below.
We have negotiated room blocks with the following hotels:
The Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway Hotel (next to the GICC) – SMU room block sold out, rooms may be available at the regular rate.
The SpringHill Suites Atlanta Airport Gateway Hotel (next to the GICC) – 37 rooms remaining – Book your stay here at $143/night
The Renaissance Atlanta Airport Gateway Hotel (next to the GICC) – 15 rooms remaining – Book your stay here at $159/night
The Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel (complimentary shuttle to GICC included in rate) – 100 rooms remaining – Book your stay here at $151/night
You may book any of these hotels over the phone at 1-888-239-1203; ask for the “Steel Market Update room block.”
The three Gateway hotels are all located next to the GICC and are easily accessible from the complimentary Atlanta Airport SkyTrain. They are all a two-minute walk from the Georgia International Convention Center. The Atlanta Airport Marriott hotel will offer a shuttle bus to and from the GICC, running Monday from noon-6 p.m., Tuesday 6:45 a.m.-9:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., and Wednesday 6:45.a.m.-9:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. The SkyTrain does not go to the Atlanta Airport Marriott hotel, and a short cab ride or car rental will be needed to reach the hotel.

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.

CRU: Excessive global supply could hit rebar mill investments in US
Following the onset of the war in Ukraine in March 2022, concerns about import availability and expectations of rising demand from President Biden’s Infrastructure Bill pushed US rebar prices to record highs. In response, a flurry of new mills and capacity expansions were announced to meet the rise in demand from growth in the construction […]

Steel buyer spirits tempered by soft spot market conditions
Steel sheet buyers report feeling bogged down by the ongoing stresses of stagnant demand, news fatigue, tariff negotiations or implementation timelines, and persistent macroeconomic uncertainty.

CRU: US stainless prices to rise on expanded S232 tariffs
Stainless prices in the US market will rise, following price increases by major US producers. Our base case scenario incorporates higher US prices in the near term, despite the initial negative reaction by the market. US stainless prices will go up in 2025 H2 and will stay elevated in 2026 as tariffs on stainless […]
