Another busy week for me as our first Steel 201: Introduction to Advanced High Strength & Other New Steels workshop will be conducted at AK Steel on Tuesday and Wednesday (Monday is a travel day for me). We have a sold-out workshop, we have some new instructors and for the first time we will be working directly with a steel mill and their research and development as well as commercial team as part of the instruction for the workshop. I am looking forward to a new experience, and I hope it will be one we can reproduce for others to attend in the future.

Our next Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop will be held on Dec. 11-12 in Toledo, Ohio, and we will be touring the North Star BlueScope steel mill. Information, and a registration link, can be found on our website. For those who have registered people for past Steel 101 workshops, be advised that the process is now going through the CRU events website, so it may look a little different than what you saw in the past. If you have any questions, please let us know at and we will get them answered for you.

My first opportunity to breathe will be next week. I will have a couple of weeks to regroup before I hit the road in earnest in October. I will be attending the CRU North American Steel Conference in Chicago on Oct. 1-3. On Oct. 11-14, I will be in Minnesota as part of my responsibilities as a Trustee for Hamline University where I went to college. The following week I will be speaking to the AWMI in Newport, Kentucky on the 18th (see article in tonight’s issue), then the week after that I am in Houston, where I will be speaking to the Industrial Packaging Alliance of North America on the 24th… Phew! You guys mind if I stay home for the month of November…?

We continue to get rave reviews from those who attended this year’s SMU Steel Summit Conference. Thank you for all of the kind words, and yes, we are already working on the 2019 edition, which will be held on Aug. 26-28.  Black out those dates, put us in your budgets as the 2019 conference will be the biggest and best one ever.

As always, your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.
