For those of you who haven’t spent much time on the Home Page of our website, you are probably unaware of us removing the video of me talking about our newsletter and that space (upper left side) is now the placeholder for a number of video testimonials about our newsletter and the SMU Steel Summit Conference. Most of the footage shot comes from attendees from the 2018 SMU Steel Summit Conference. I think you will find the videos interesting. Go give them a “click…”
We are seeing registrations for the 2019 SMU Steel Summit Conference starting to gain traction. The wheels are starting to spin, and our expectations are to exceed the 912 registrations that we had in 2018. Over the next few weeks we will begin rolling out portion of our program and some of our speakers. I believe we are going to put on a tremendous program, hitting the highlights needed by those of you who are buying or selling steel, or who are managing companies in North America. You can find more information about last year’s speakers and attending companies on our website. You can also find the links to register for the 2019 conference, which will be held in Atlanta on Aug. 26-28. Go to www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/events/steel-summit
I’m in the office for yet another week. I start traveling again on Monday, Jan. 28, as I head to Starkville, Miss., for our next Steel 101 workshop. I think there are but a couple of seats left available should you want to send someone at the last moment. You can learn more and get the registration link at www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/events/steel101
As always, your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

The Tariff Town amusement park ride shows no signs of slowing down.

Cliffs came tantalizing close to buying U.S. Steel in 2023. There were rumors in 2024 that Cliffs might buy NLMK USA before it ultimately purchased Stelco for $2.5 billion in November of last year. Who would have thought that asset sales would have been the focal point of discussion just six months later?

Given the news about tariffs and bringing back industries to the US, a brief look back in time may show how our economy changes with technological advances and the shifting economies of scale.

Final Thoughts
We’ve talked about tariffs ad nauseam for much of the year. And I’m afraid this topic isn’t going away anytime soon. There’s a feeling that the tariff “can” will just be kicked down the road again and again, and again.

Can technology help with pig iron and DRI/HBI tariffs?
