Nobilis Plans Carbon-Neutral Pipe Mill Near Detroit

Brian Harroun, founder and president of Nobilis Pipe Co., sees an opportunity for a new domestic steel mill to bring production of specialty pipe and tube products back to the United States—and to do it in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way. Nobilis Pipe is now working to secure financing for construction of one of the first carbon neutral steel production facilities in the world, to be located near Detroit.
The company hopes to begin production at the $950 million EAF mill by 2022. The mill will have a rated capacity of 50,000 metric tons per year of seamless pipes in stainless steel, duplex and nickel alloys ranging from one-quarter inch to 18 inches in diameter. The mill will serve a variety of industries including military and defense, aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, OCTG, and steel service centers and distributors. All materials produced at Nobilis will be melted and manufactured on the premises in the United States and will be DFARS compliant and capable of meeting the most demanding high-temperature and corrosion-resistant applications, the company claims.
“We are planning to locate Nobilis Pipe in the metropolitan Detroit area with enough space to expand in the future and add all the solar and wind power we will need to meet our sustainability goals,” Harroun said. “Nobilis Pipe is excited about the prospect of significantly contributing to the expansion of economic diversity in Michigan with our revenue, which is not affected by the trends of the automotive industry.”
