SMU Steel 101 Workshop – Consistent Quality Instruction & Results
Written by John Packard
November 11, 2019
There is one constant to our SMU Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals Workshop – just about everyone who takes the workshop enjoys it and sees the value in the subject matter being taught. This has resulted in many of our past attendees working their way up within their company’s management structure.
Our next Steel 101 workshop is being held in the warm climate of Southern California on Jan. 7-8, 2020. We will conduct the workshop at our hotel located in Ontario, Calif., conveniently located close to the Ontario airport (you can also go through LAX). Also located close by is the California Steel Industries steel mill, which we will tour on the first afternoon of the workshop.
You can get more information about our agenda, hotel, and costs to attend by going to our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/Events/Steel101
Here’s what past attendees have had to say about our workshop over the years:
“It was very well done. I like the interactive aspect of it. The presenters gave us real-world information with examples. It was just technical enough without being too difficult to understand.”
Jonathan Lucas, NCI Group – North Star BlueScope Tour 2018
“The Steel Workshop was a very informative introduction to the entire steel industry from manufacturing to purchasing steel and the factors driving the market. I would highly recommend the workshop to anyone new to the industry.”
Rick Cooper, Taylor Steel – NLMK Tour 2018
“I thought the class was amazing and very helpful for someone like me who was new to the market. I appreciated the time each instructor took to ensure every question was answered. I’d love to go to another one next year even if it comes out of my own pocket. A+.”
Chris Burkepile, Kloeckner Metals – North Star BlueScope Tour 2018
“The Steel 101 Workshop provided the foundation of the steel making process and market insights to make more informed decisions, identify trends, and delivery valuable information to companies and customers.”
Mike O’Neil, Edw. C. Levy Co. – Steel Dynamics Tour 2019
“Overall, the workshop was very informative. The individuals from SMU know what they are talking about and can answer any questions you may have regardless of your level of experience. I would recommend this workshop not for just new hires into the steel market but as a refresher course for those who have been involved for years. I have returned to my office with a better understanding of how steel is made and what it takes to obtain the products we utilize.”
John Quinn, Curtis Steel Company – Nucor Tour 2018
“I enjoyed the workshop! I would recommend it to anyone new to the steel industry. Great networking experience. The passion of the SMU group is seen throughout the whole workshop.”
Olivia Forrester, National Material L.P. – North Star BlueScope Tour 2018
“Very interesting. The information is valuable for different areas, sales, quality, purchasing, etc. Facilitators from different areas and vast experience make the workshop a good investment.”
Rafael Saenz, CoilPlus Texas – North Star BlueScope Tour 2018
“Perfect event to attend if you are new to the steel industry or would like to learn more about it. Great balance of overall industry information as well as the opportunity to visually see the steel-making process firsthand at a mill.”
Zack Kinnoin, CEMCO – Nucor Tour 2018
“This was a very informative workshop for any organization related to steel. We were in good hands with very knowledgeable, friendly instructors who are willing to take time to explain steel in detail no matter how simple or complicated questions may be. I highly recommend!”
Terrence Taylor, Goodman Manufacturing- Steel Dynamics Tour 2017
“Being new to the steel industry, I had so many questions! It is hard to sift through all the information found online and not get overwhelmed, but having this seminar is a good starting point to begin more in-depth searches and ask more intelligent questions. While you don’t walk out of this seminar as an expert, you do have a really good toolbox to become one in time. I thank the organizers and will try to get everyone in the company to eventually attend one of these in the future!”
Alejandra Bohorquez, Industrial Components of Texas – North Star BlueScope Tour 2017
“The most informative Steel Workshop I’ve ever been to, presented by a superb and diverse group of speakers.”
Chuck Permar, Heidtman Steel Products, Inc – NLMK Tour 2018
“SMU Steel 101 is a great learning tool for anyone working in the steel industry in any position. I wish I had this class 10 years ago.”
Joann Pirko, Magic Coil Products – Steel Dynamics Tour 2017
“The presenters were great! The info was current and very useful!”
Tony Konczal, National Galvanizing – North Star BlueScope Tour 2018
This seminar was very necessary for me to learn the basics of steel; the technical and slang words, the gages of material and how it is produced and run through a mill. I feel I will be more engaged and able to communicate better in conversations with steel service center representatives.”
Kathryn Czarnecki, Mestek Inc. – Steel Dynamics Tour 2019
“This is an outstanding workshop with very knowledgeable, engaging instructors. I would recommend it to anyone new to the industry or even experienced professionals within the industry.”
Dylan Pishney, Steel Dynamics – Steel Dynamics Tour 2017
“The Steel 101 workshop is a must for anyone beginning their journey in the metals industry. Getting to work hand in hand with some of the industry’s most experienced professionals has helped launch me forward in my new career. This industry is complicated, and the workshop cleared up so many questions. Learning all this valuable information and then getting to see it in action on the mill tour was a priceless experience. I strongly encourage anyone who is new to the metals industry to sign up.”
Victoria Letnich, Olympic Steel – SSAB Tour 2018
“I think SMU has done a fantastic job condensing so much valuable information into a short amount of time, while keeping the atmosphere fun and well paced. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and have decades of experience. I will be recommending this workshop to my peers.
Brian Hunt, McNICHOLS CO. – NLMK Tour 2018

Final thoughts
First off, we hope everyone had a safe and happy July 4th holiday, with fireworks seen and BBQs attended. Many parts of the country are quite toasty at the moment, signaling that, yes, summer has indeed arrived. And looking at our most recent survey results, the summer doldrums have arrived as well.
