Stelco Operations Hit by Cyberattack

A cybersecurity attack at Canadian steel producer Stelco is a reminder to all in the steel industry to secure and protect their data and operations.
Stelco announced Monday that it was the victim of a criminal attack on its information systems. Immediate countermeasures were implemented that limited the scope of the attack, but certain operations, including steel production, were temporarily paused as a precautionary measure. Operations have since resumed.
“Stelco’s team, in conjunction with industry-leading cybersecurity specialists and other advisors, continues to investigate the incident and extent of the impact on its systems,” said the company in a press release. “Stelco is implementing its back-up and recovery plans to fully re-establish its systems as quickly as possible, and some business functions may be adversely affected during this recovery process.”
Cyberattacks have become increasing prevalent at large and small businesses and organizations. A ransomware attack in March shut down EVRAZ NA information systems across the U.S. and Canada, resulting in the temporary layoff of employees and disruption to freight flows.
