Meet the Steel 101 Instructors: Roger Walburn
Written by Tim Triplett
November 20, 2020
Steel 101 instructor Roger Walburn is the General Manager-Customer Technical Service for NLMK-USA. Roger received his degree in Materials Science Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Roger spent the first decade of his career in high-tech alloys and titanium with Allegheny Technologies, and the last 15 years exclusively in carbon steels with NLMK-USA. Having the unique blend of a metallurgical engineering background, combined with a deep passion and connection to customers and their needs, has given Roger a special perspective on the steel industry.
Roger kicks things off at Steel Market Update’s Steel 101: Introduction to Steelmaking and Market Fundamentals workshops beginning with an overview of how the steel industry is structured, along with some metallurgical basics to set the foundation for all that follows. He provides a fascinating perspective that is relatable to any person in the steel or metals industry. In his description of the Electric Arc Furnace, he clarifies the differences and unique advantages of the EAF steelmaking model, focusing on the flexible raw material usage and environmental advantages.
Some of you may have seen Roger at the Virtual SMU Steel Summit in August when he provided his “sneak peek” video for the Steel 101 Workshop. His famous paper clip demonstration is just one example of how Roger is able to turn the technical aspects and details of steelmaking into a hands-on learning experience.
To learn more from Roger and our other instructors, please join us on Dec. 8-9 at our next Steel 101 Workshop. Click here to find out more or to register. We look forward to seeing you there!
