SMU Steel Summit Conference Update
Written by John Packard
May 11, 2022
We will soon pass through 500 registered executives on our way to 1,200 executives at this year’s SMU Steel Summit Conference. The conference will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center located next to the Atlanta International Airport. The dates for this year’s conference are Mon.-Weds., Aug. 22-24. You can learn more about our agenda, speakers, the NexGen Leadership Award, companies already registered to attend, costs to attend, and how to register by going to https://www.events.crugroup.com/smusteelsummit/home
I have been asked if Paul Lowrey, managing director and founder of Steel Research Associates LLC, will be speaking at this year’s event. Because of the popularity and the quality of his presentations, Paul will be one of the featured keynote speakers. The title of his keynote presentation is “It’s a Great Time to be in the Steel Industry.”
Lowrey has in the past discussed topics such as scrap being the next precious metal. He has also talked about why some industry observers misunderstood the new capacity being built in the United States. This year, Paul will talk about why none of the historical norms for the industry apply anymore. It’s time to throw away the old models and build new ones.
Lowrey will join our other keynote speakers including Lourenco Goncalves, chairman, president, and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.; Mark Millett, president and CEO of Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI); Alan Beaulieu, president of ITR Economics; Alan Kestenbaum, executive chairman and CEO of Stelco; and Gene Marks, president of The Marks Group.
We also have some great panels. John Anton, economics director for S&P Global Market Intelligence, will join Timna Tanners, managing director at Wolfe Research, and Josh Spoores, principal analyst – steel for the CRU Group. They will discuss their steel and commodity forecast for the balance 2022 and into 2023.
You can join those already registered for this year’s event by clicking here or going to https://www.events.crugroup.com/smusteelsummit/home
We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

HR Futures: Market finds footing on supply-side mechanics
As Labor Day marks the transition into fall, the steel market enters September with a similar sense of change. Supply-side fundamentals are beginning to show signs of restraint: imports are limited, outages loom, and production is capped, setting the stage for a market that feels steady on the surface but still unsettled underneath.
