SMU Steel Summit Conference: Hotels Quickly Filling Up
Written by John Packard
June 6, 2022
Registrations continue to flock in, and we are now approaching 700 registered executives for the 2022 SMU Steel Summit Conference. We anticipate close to 1,200 executives will be registered by the time we get to the conference, which is being held at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta on August 22-24. You can join them by clicking on this link, which will take you to the registration page.
With the uptick in registrations, we are finding that our hotel blocks are beginning to sell out. The Renaissance Hotel at the Gateway Center room block is sold out. The hotel may have more rooms available, but they will be at the full price for that time of the year. The Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway Hotel room block is sold out for Sunday evening (Aug. 21), and there are only a few rooms left for Monday and Tuesday evening. As with the Renaissance, the Marriott Gateway may have more rooms, but they will be at whatever rate is available for that week.
There are two other hotels in the Gateway area where we have room blocks. As of the time of this writing those hotels had not yet reported their availability. However, if experience is any guide, they tend to sell out after the Renaissance and Marriott Gateway hotels.
The next closest hotels, which are not part of our room block, are the Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel, which is located at 4711 Best Road. There is also a Westin Hotel, which is located across the street from the Atlanta Airport Marriott. The Westin’s address is 4736 Best Road in Atlanta. Both hotels have service to and from the airport. They do not have service to the convention center, which is located about 1-2 miles away.
Remember, to access our room block you must first register for the conference. After registration, you will receive a link that will allow you to access our room block at the four Gateway Hotels located next to the convention center. For those of you who have not attended a Steel Summit Conference in the past, the four hotels are the Renaissance (room block sold out), the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway (room block sold out for Sunday, a few rooms remain for Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday), The AC Hotel by Marriott Atlanta Airport Gateway (rooms should still be available), and the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Atlanta Airport Gateway (rooms should still be available).
The SMU Steel Summit Conference is the largest gathering of steel decision makers associated with the flat rolled and plate steel segments of the economy. The conference attracts company presidents and CEOs, vice presidents of sales and purchasing, chief operating officers, CFOs, support staff, and young up-and-coming executives associated with manufacturing, steel distribution, steel mills, trading, toll processors, and suppliers to those industries. This is the 13th year Steel Market Update has hosted this conference.

Final thoughts
First off, we hope everyone had a safe and happy July 4th holiday, with fireworks seen and BBQs attended. Many parts of the country are quite toasty at the moment, signaling that, yes, summer has indeed arrived. And looking at our most recent survey results, the summer doldrums have arrived as well.
