SMU NexGen Leadership Award: Nominations to Close Soon
Written by John Packard
June 21, 2022
As an industry, we should strive to recognize young talent within the industry as one of the ways to motivate and inspire our employees. Over the years, one of the things I have learned through the conversations I have with young people in manufacturing, steel distribution, steel mills, and others associated with the flat rolled and plate industries is that they yearn to be recognized for what they have accomplished. This is one of the reasons why Steel Market Update, in conjunction with the Steel Manufacturers Association and Modern Metals, created the NexGen Leadership Award.
One of the easiest ways to recognize the young people within your organization is to nominate those high achievers for the 2022 SMU NexGen Leadership Award. The process is painless and confidential. Once nominated, those employees are eligible for reduced rates to attend the 2022 SMU Steel Summit Conference where we will host a networking cocktail reception for all nominees, as well as those young people who have opted to join the NexGen Metals Community. Three finalists for the award will receive free admission to the conference, plus up to $1,000 to cover expenses to attend the conference where one of them will be crowned the 2022 SMU NexGen Leadership Award Winner.
You can find out more about how to nominate someone (or yourself) on the NexGen Leadership Award page by clicking here. There, we also have examples of what a good nomination submission looks like, and there is information on the past three winners of the award.
Time is beginning to run short, and your nominations need to be received soon. If you have any questions regarding the nomination process, please reach out to Jill.Waldman@crugroup.com.

Final Thoughts
The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.
