Volvo has become the world’s first truck manufacturer to deliver electric trucks made with fossil-free steel. The Swedish auto manufacturer announced on Nov. 10 that the trucks are now being delivered to customers.
According to a press release, Volvo began manufacturing the heavy-duty electric trucks in September.
“Our journey to net zero emissions includes both making our vehicles fossil free in operation and over time fully replacing the material in our trucks with fossil free and recycled alternatives,” said Jessica Sandström, senior vice president of product management of Volvo Trucks.
The fossil-free steel was provided by Swedish steelmaker SSAB, just over a year after announcing its production of fossil-free steel. SSAB produces this steel with a new technology that uses fossil-free electricity and hydrogen, paving the way to a lower climate impact and zero emissions.
