Steel mills in the US saw a rise in shipments in January, according to just-released data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
AISI said domestic mills shipped 7,435,458 short tons (st) of steel in January. That was 4.1% more than December’s shipments of 7,145,016 st.
January mill shipments showed a 0.7% rise from a year earlier, with cold-rolled sheet and strip shipments increasing 2%. At the same time, shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip dropped 6%, while hot-rolled sheet and strip shipments fell 8% from last year.
AISI noted that it has upwardly revised its 2024 shipment report: US mill shipments for the year reached 86,698,917 st, a decline of 3% from the 89,338,472 st shipped in 2023.
