USS, Nippon Steel quiet as litigation deadline approaches

There has been little word from U.S. Steel, Nippon Steel, or the White House since President Trump endorsed the companies’ “partnership” on social media and celebrated it at the May 30 rally outside Pittsburgh.
That could be due to the ongoing litigation surrounding the deal.
Recall Nippon Steel, Nippon Steel North America, and U.S. Steel sued the US government after President Biden blocked the deal earlier this year.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker said in a June 6 SEC filing that the three parties have been working “to reach a resolution that would obviate the need for CFIUS Litigation.”
“In light of the ongoing discussions,” the Justice Department requested that the CFIUS litigation abeyance be extended and all parties be required to provide a further update on Friday, June 13.
That is, “if the action has not been voluntarily dismissed by that date.”
U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel North America did not return requests for comment.
