Metallus and the United Steelworkers (USW) union extended their contract to Oct. 15 as talks continue on a new labor deal.
The parties have agreed to continue the existing contract past its Sept. 29 deadline as they find a mutually acceptable agreement, according to a statement from Metallus.
The Canton, Ohio-based specialty metals manufacturer and USW local 1123 began negotiations for ~1,200 bargaining employees on Aug. 18.
“We remain focused on reaching a collaborative agreement that supports the long-term success of the company and meets the needs of all stakeholders. Our commitment to strong cash generation and sustained profitability across market cycles remains firm, as does our dedication to serving customers and operating safely,” said Mike Williams, CEO of Metallus.
USW District 1 Director Donnie Blatt said the union remains resolute in its commitments to members.
“The USW is committed to bargaining over issues that are important to our members and negotiating a contract at Metallus that is fair and equitable based on industry standards,” he said.
Blatt added, “The union looks forward to re-engaging with management in constructive and meaningful negotiations and bringing them to a successful conclusion.”
