Atlas Tube up $50/ton following NLMK USA sheet price hike

Written by Michael Cowden

Atlas Tube, in a leading move, said it aims to increase prices for mechanical tubing, hollow structural sections (HSS), and piling products by at least $50 per short ton (st).

The Chicago-based steel pipe and tube producer said the increase was effective immediately for all new orders, according to a letter to customers dated Friday.

The company noted that the increase applied to all unconfirmed quotes and contracts. It said orders currently on its books would be price protected for shipment through Nov. 21.

Atlas Tube, the largest HSS producer in North America, is a division of Zekelman Industries.

Its $50/st price hike came shortly after flat-rolled steelmaker NLMK USA announced a price hike of the same amount for hot-rolled (HR) coil and cold-rolled (CR) coil earlier in the day on Friday.

Sheet is the substrate used to make welded tubular products such as HSS and mechanical tubing.

SMU does not track prices for steel tube and pipe. We last assessed sheet prices on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Our hot-roll coil price stands at $805/st, up $20/st from a month ago. We will next update sheet and plate prices on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
