USW rejects pact with Metallus, current contract extends through January

    Written by Kristen DiLandro

The United Steelworkers (USW) union voted down a tentative agreement with Metallus Inc. last week. The parties will continue the existing labor contract for 90 days, until Jan. 29, 2026, as they continue negotiating.

Metallus contends that operations will continue without disruption.

In August and September, the parties met to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. On Oct. 3, Metallus and the USW reached a tentative agreement. However, members of the local 1123 voted against passing it.

USW leaders issued a statement committing to good faith efforts in the continuing discussions with the Canton, Ohio-based specialty metals, manufactured components, and supply chain solutions enterprise.

“Our members at Local 1123 have voted the tentative agreement down based on their individual needs and opinions,” Donnie Blatt, USW District 1 director, told SMU. “We are committed to returning to the bargaining table with Metallus to address those concerns, and reach a fair and equitable agreement, as soon as possible.”

Leadership at Metallus expressed disappointment by the outcome of the union vote but also committed to earnest discussions for the shared benefit of each party.

“The proposed agreement was the result of extensive negotiations and reflected our genuine commitment to providing competitive wages, strong benefits, and a safe working environment, while also supporting the long-term sustainability and growth of our business,” Metallus CEO Mike Williams said in a statement on Oct. 30.

He added, “We remain focused on reaching an equitable agreement that supports our employees’ job security while aligning with Metallus’ long-term strategic goals.”

The contract affects ~1,200 Canton-based bargaining employees.
