    BlueScope names next chief executive

    Written by Laura Miller

Australia’s BlueScope Steel has announced succession plans for its top leader.

Tania Archibald will assume the role of managing director and chief executive of the Melbourne-based company as of Feb. 1, 2026. At present, she is chief executive of BlueScope’s Australian Steel Products business.

Until then, Mark Vassella will continue to serve as MD and CEO, a role he has held for eight years. He will then remain available for transitional support until his official retirement on July 1, 2026, the company said.

“It has been a privilege to lead BlueScope and work with such a brilliant team,” Vassella said. But, “This is the right time to hand over,” he added.

Under Vassella’s leadership, “Bluescope has evolved into a structurally resilient business,” said BlueScope Chair Jane McAloon. “Mark has led BlueScope with clarity and conviction, humility and warmth. By every measure, he has been an outstanding CEO, and we thank him sincerely and wish him well in his retirement. He will be greatly missed.”

BlueScope’s “Board has appointed an outstanding successor,” Vassella noted. “Tania and I have worked together for many years, and I know that she has the skill, judgment and capability to lead BlueScope.”

McAloon said of Archibald’s appointment: “Tania is a highly capable executive who has demonstrated outstanding leadership over the course of her 30-year career at BlueScope.”

Archibald served as CFO of BlueScope from 2018 to 2023. She held various leadership positions across the company’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Archibald’s remuneration includes annual fixed pay of AU$1.85 million (~US$1.2 million) as well as other incentives, according to a company filing with the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
