SunCoke and Cliffs extend coke contract

    Written by Laura Miller

SunCoke Energy Inc. and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. have agreed to extend their coke supply agreement for another three years.

Under the terms of the deal, SunCoke will supply 500,000 short tons of metallurgical coke to Cliffs each year.

SunCoke, based in Lisle, Ill., said its Haverhill cokemaking facility in Franklin Furnace, Ohio, will provide the material.

The contract begins on Jan. 1, 2026.

“This contract affirms the long-term partnership of SunCoke and Cleveland-Cliffs,” commented SunCoke President and CEO Katherine Gates. “We are pleased to continue supplying coke from our Haverhill facility to Cliffs’ blast furnaces.”

Cliffs did not respond to a request for comment.

The flat-rolled steelmaker operates three blast furnaces in Ohio: two in its hometown of Cleveland and one at its Middletown Works, according to SMU’s Blast Furnace Status Table.

Cleveland Works produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized sheet and slabs. The Middletown plant makes hot- and cold-rolled carbon steels, enameling steels, and aluminized carbon and stainless steels.
