USW rejects second proposed contract with Metallus

Members of the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1123 labor union voted against ratifying a second proposed deal with Metallus on Dec. 18.
Negotiations between the two parties resumed after the initial tentative agreement did not pass the union’s Oct. 30 vote. The parties arrived at this second tentative pact on Dec. 4.
USW district leadership said it’s meeting with its membership to hear concerns. The union plans to address them with Metallus during the next round of negotiations.
District 1 Director Donnie Blatt stated, “The union looks forward to reengaging the company and addressing the concerns of the membership.”
Blatt added, “Discussions are underway to schedule those meetings as soon as possible.”
In its statement, Metallus, highlighted additions to the agreement. The company noted “historic” wage increases, annual raises, and premiums for specialized roles. The agreement contained comprehensive health coverage with no increases to co-pays or co-insurance. In addition, it introduced pay for parental and personal leave along with enhanced contributions to employee retirement benefits.
Mike Williams, CEO of the Canton, Ohio-based specialty metals, manufactured components, and supply chain solutions enterprise, said the outcome of the vote was disappointing.
“We are deeply disappointed by the outcome of this vote. Before casting their votes, our bargaining employees had opportunities to attend information sessions to better understand the proposed agreement,” stated Williams.
“We will continue to negotiate in good faith and remain committed to working toward a resolution that supports both our employees and the company’s future,” Williams added.
The current contract between the ~1,200 USW employees and Metallus extends through Jan. 26, 2026.
