Tenaris reactivates finishing ops at Koppel steel plant

    Written by Laura Miller

Following a $2.1-million outlay to restart operations, Tenaris is reactivating the heat treatment and finishing operations at its EAF mill in Koppel, Pa.

The company will hire at least 80 employees to support the lines’ reactivation, it said in a statement sent to SMU.

“Koppel remains a cornerstone of our US operations,” commented Tenaris US President Guillermo Moreno, “allowing us to deliver high-quality steel products that support US energy and industrial needs.”

He added, “Reopening the heat treatment and finishing lines in Koppel reinforces the strength of our domestic production capabilities for our customers across the US.”

The Koppel plant produces steel billets via an electric-arc furnace steel shop. The billets are then sent to the Tenaris facility in nearby Ambridge, Pa., to be rolled into seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG). The OCTG are then returned to Koppel for quenching, tempering, and finishing. The pipes are threaded at a facility in Brookfield, Ohio.

The Koppel restart follows investments of over $150 million, including an $85-million upgrade to the steel shop’s exhaust system as well as Tenaris subsidiary Steel Recycling Services’ recent acquisition of a scrap processing yard in Beaver Falls, Pa.

Global pipe maker Tenaris is based in Luxembourg. Its US headquarters are in Houston.
