Rig count flat in US, slips in Canada

    Written by Laura Miller

The latest Baker Hughes rig count report shows steady drilling for oil and gas in the US, while drilling in Canada slowed slightly.

The US rig count this week totaled 551 active rotary rigs. While the number was flat from the week prior, a breakdown shows three fewer oil rigs and three more gas rigs in operation. Miscellaneous rigs were unchanged at 9.

In Canada, there were six fewer rotary rigs in operation than the previous week. Oil rigs slipped by two and gas rigs declined by four.

Baker Hughes updates the international rig count monthly. Last week it reported 1,079 rigs for the month of January. The count increased by 14 rigs from the previous month but was down by 20 rigs from last year’s count.

The Baker Hughes rig count is significant for the steel industry because it is a leading indicator of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) demand, a key end market for steel sheet.
