Honoring the legacy of Heidtman Steel's John C. Bates, Sr.

    Written by Michael Cowden

The steel community recognizes and honors the remarkable legacy of John C. Bates, Sr., whose 60-year career helped shape Heidtman Steel and left a lasting impact on the metals industry.

Born August 17, 1943, in Cleveland, John attended Michigan State University on a full-ride scholarship, establishing the work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that would define his life. He began his career at Heidtman Steel on June 3, 1963, and remained dedicated to the company for six decades.

Under John’s leadership, Heidtman Steel grew from a small Toledo, Ohio-based slitting operation into a diversified steel processor with slitting, pickling, galvanizing, blanking, and tubing operations across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Rising to the roles of owner, president, and chairman of the board, he led with integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to employees, customers, and industry partners. In 2013, he was named Service Center Executive of the Year, one of the industry’s highest honors.

John was widely respected not only for his business accomplishments but also for the relationships he built. He was a mentor, a steady leader, and a trusted friend to many throughout the steel community.

Outside of work, John embraced life fully. He was an avid euchre player and passionate fisherman, whether in the rivers of Canada or the waters of the Florida Keys. His warmth, humor, and ever-present smile made him the kind of leader people gravitated toward and remembered.

John’s legacy of hard work, gratitude, and genuine care for others will continue to guide Heidtman Steel and inspire those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Feb. 27, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The Toledo Club, 235 14th Street, Toledo, Ohio. Those wishing to honor his memory may share condolences with the family or consider memorial contributions in his name.
