US weekly rig count increases, Canadian count dips

Baker Hughes’ latest report for the week ended April 2 showed the US added five rigs while Canada’s count decreased by 11.

The US added three gas-drilling rigs, bringing the weekly total to 130. The total oil drilling rig count increased to 411, with the weekly addition of two rigs. The complete weekly count of US rigs equaled 548, down by 42 compared to April 4, 2025, when rigs totaled 590.

The report showed that Canada’s rigs totaled 142 for the week. The count reflects a deficit of 11 rigs compared to the 153 total in the previous week and the same week of 2025. Gas rigs fell by four to a total of 54 this week. Oil rigs fell by seven, bringing the week’s total to 88.

Baker Hughes updates the international rig count monthly. March’s count of 1,058 rigs declined by 54 from February and was down by 27 from March last year.

The Baker Hughes rig count is significant for the steel industry because it is a leading indicator of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) demand, a key end market for steel sheet.
