Canada’s Algoma Steel and Roshel Inc. have partnered to form Roshel Algoma Defence (RADS), a sovereign ballistic steel solutions joint venture.
The new Ontario-based company plans to fabricate, form, weld, and machine metal in Canada and will provide sovereign ballistic steel defense solutions. RADS also intends to serve infrastructure, marine, aerospace, and security platforms industries. RADS will export its ballistic steel solutions to allied countries, according to its Apr. 8 statement.
Rajat Marwah, Algoma’s CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the new venture.
“Algoma Steel is ready to enhance Canada’s defense capacity, starting now. This partnership with Roshel puts our production capabilities, our workforce, and our Sault Ste. Marie facilities directly in service of Canada’s national security,” said Marwah.
He added, “Buy Canadian isn’t just a policy for us, it’s a strategy and a commitment to hundreds of good jobs.”
Roshel’s CEO Roman Shimonov welcomed the opportunity to partner with Canada and meet its defense demands. The Brampton, Ontario-based enterprise designs and builds armored vehicles.
“Canada’s Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) procurement, which is expected to deliver thousands of vehicles for the Canadian Armed Forces, represents a cornerstone opportunity for Roshel,” said Shimonov.
RADS anticipates ~500 new positions within the company and said it expects to hire for multiple high-quality manufacturing roles.
