USS and USW convene ahead of formal contract negotiations

    Written by Kristen DiLandro

The United Steelworkers (USW) labor union and U.S. Steel plan to address their partnership and profit-sharing agreement during the week of May 11, according to a text message sent to USW members on Monday evening.

Union leaders said partnership meetings with the Pittsburgh, P.A.-headquartered steel giant took place on Monday. During the union-only meeting on Tuesday, May 12, members discussed current issues and prepared for the meeting with USS leadership. The USW and USS leaders scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, May 13.

“The meeting will be an opportunity to raise certain issues, including profit sharing, and lay out some expectations for negotiations,” stated the message.

The union said it is specifically concerned with the profit-sharing aspect of its terms.

The USW’s four-year contract with U.S. Steel expires on Sept. 1.

USS did not respond to SMU’s request to comment on the topic.
