Written by Laura Miller
The US rig count crept higher for a fourth week, while Canada’s count held steady for a second, according to the latest data from Baker Hughes.
In the week ending May 15, the number of rotary rigs operating in the US rose by three to 551 as the US gained five oil rigs but lost one gas and one miscellaneous rig. There were 415 oil rigs in operation vs. 473 at this time last year, 128 gas rigs compared to 100 last year, and eight miscellaneous rigs vs. three last year.
Canada lost one oil rig but gained one gas rig last week, making its count flat for the week at 124 rigs. There are two more oil rigs and one additional gas rig in operation compared to this time last year.

The monthly international rig count was updated at the beginning of May with April data. This count was 1,036 rigs, down 22 from the previous month and 51 fewer than the same month one year prior.
