USW provides update on bargaining with Cliffs
Written by Kristen DiLandro
The United Steelworkers (USW) informed members it continues bargaining with Cleveland-Cliffs about both the union’s Training Committee and the Contracting Out Committee.
The USW text message update highlighted ongoing negotiations with the Cleveland-based steelmaker in Pittsburgh this week.
“Both local issue bargaining and master bargaining committee work continue in Pittsburgh. This week’s update highlights the work of the Training Committee and Contracting Out Committee and why these issues matter,” stated the text sent Friday, July 31.
On its website, the USW laid out key points it was addressing with the Cliffs.
For example, the training committee talks address safety, best practices, and USW members’ access to training.
The contracting out committee discussions aim to preserve bargaining unit jobs, develop opportunities, and maintain localized bargaining committees.
“Whether it’s protecting jobs from being contracted out or expanding access to training, both committees are focused on creating opportunities for hourly employees and strengthening our union workforce,” the USW stated.
Master contract negotiations began with U.S. Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs on July 20. Union contracts with both steelmakers expire on Sept. 1.
