USW and USS contract talks center workforce safety
Written by Kristen DiLandro
Recent master contract negotiations between the United Steelworkers (USW) and U.S. Steel (USS) highlight workforce safety measures.
In the union’s update on Thursday, members received assurance that it was seeking stronger safeguards. It cited the tragic incident at Clairton Coke Works in August 2025 and last month’s devastating loss at Granite City Works.
“We’re fighting for common sense improvements, including better siting practices, structural inspections, additional training, improved equipment for first responders, more robust training for electricians to help enable them to do their jobs and mental health resources for workers impacted when a fatal catastrophe occurs,” stated a USW text message.
The union provided a full outline of its safety expectations here.
Master contract negotiations commenced on July 20.
