Written by John Packard
January 29, 2017
Flat rolled steel prices were essentially unchanged on the Platts and SMU indexes while SteelBenchmarker, which only produces their indices twice per month, played catch up. The three steel indexes agreed that benchmark hot rolled coil was averaging $630 per ton ($629 was the average of the three indexes) or $31.50/cwt.
Cold rolled was unchanged at $830 per ton ($41.50/cwt) at Platts and SMU while SteelBenchmarker lagged at $817 per ton.
Coated products – galvanized and Galvalume – were unchanged. Note that the galvanized number is for .060″ G90 and Galvalume is .0142″ AZ50, Grade 80 (the extras for each are shown after the table below).
Plate prices increased on both Platts ($650) and SteelBenchmarker ($678) by approximately $40 per ton ($2.00/cwt).
