U.S. Raw Steel Production Up 2.3 Percent

U.S. raw steel production hit 1,763,000 net tons in the week ending July 15, up 1.7 percent from the previous week and up 5.8 percent from the same week last year. Mill capacity utilization for the July 15 week averaged 75.6 percent, up from 74.3 percent the prior week and 71.3 percent the prior year.
Adjusted year-to-date production through July 15 totaled 48,566,000 net tons, an increase of 2.3 percent from the same period in 2016.
Following is production for the July 15 week by district: Northeast, 212,000 net tons; Great Lakes, 669,000 net tons; Midwest, 168,000 net tons; South, 639,000 net tons; and West, 75,000 net tons; for a total of 1,763,000.
The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated. The figures are compiled from weekly production tonnage from 50 percent of the domestic producers combined with monthly production data for the remainder. Therefore, this report should be used primarily to assess production trends. The AISI monthly production report provides a more detailed summary of steel production based on data supplied by companies representing 75 percent of U.S. production capacity.
Note that mill capability for second-quarter 2017 was approximately 30.3 million tons, compared to 30.4 million tons for the same period last year and 30.0 million tons for the first quarter.
