Minor Fire at Burns Harbor Interrupts Operations

A minor fire at the ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor plate mill caused a shutdown in operations on Friday. The fire began in the control room for one of the 160-inch shear lines.
Firefighters responded to the incident from five area fire departments, said spokeswoman Mary Beth Holford. Paramedics evaluated two employees for smoke inhalation, but both were unharmed.
The rolling mill was temporarily shut down, but returned to operation on Tuesday morning. The shearing line will remain down for repairs, said Holford.
The incident remains under investigation by the company.
“We will be in close communication with any affected customers and anticipate only minimal, if any, impact on our ability to meet customer demand,” she added.
ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor is located in Porter County, Mich., and employs approximately 3,400 workers.
